Introduction

In an era marked by digital connectivity yet physical separation, i explored how to bridge emotional distances with tangible sensations. My project, Feeelie, was developed as part of the "Nähe über Distanz" initiative, exploring haptic communication over smart textiles.

Problem

In today’s globalized world, relationships stretch across continents, making physical touch and presence rare commodities. This lack was profoundly felt by those like my design muse, Sarah Hamada, whose relationship endured the strains of long-distance separation.

Solution

Feeelie, an innovative smart wearable, is designed to simulate the intimate touch between loved ones, regardless of the physical distance. It translates the warmth, pressure, and light of human touch into digital signals that can be felt in real-time.

Process

  • Inspiration and Design Goals: Based on the personas of an engaged couple the goal was to create a device that could convey affection and presence effectively.

  • Development Stages: The process involved iterative design and user feedback to perfect a wearable that was comfortable, stylish, and functional.

  • Technical Implementation: Feeelie utilizes heat, light, and vibration to mimic human touch. It integrates seamlessly with a mobile application, allowing users to send customized 'touches' to a connected partner’s device.

Haptics

  • Challenges: Balancing the intensity of sensory feedback to accurately represent human touch without being intrusive was a significant challenge.

  • Benefits: Feeelie allows individuals to express and receive love and comfort through physical sensations, fostering a deeper emotional connection between distant loved ones.
